Short –  a – ( fatha )

We looked at the Arabic word for a pen which is pronounced “qalam”قلم

We learned how to write it without the vowel ( a ), which is most common: قلم

And with the vowel ( a ) : ( fatha ), which is used in educational contexts. قَلم

As we can see, the short vowel ( a )  –  is just written as a line above the consonant. (ـــَــ)

Short – I – ( kasra )

Now let’s look at ( a )  word with the short vowel ( i ). For example the Arabic word for girl, which is pronounced “bint”.

This is how the word is written without vowels: بنت

And here it is with the vowel (  I ) : ( kasra ): بِنت

So the short vowel – i –  is just written as a line below the consonant: ِ(ـــِـ)

Short  -u- ( dama )  (ــُـ)

Now we have only one more short vowel left to look at  – u-  ( dama ). We can use the Arabic word for the frog as an example. It is pronounced “Dofdaa”.

This is how to write the word for dream without the vowel – u-: ضفدع

And this is how to write it with the vowel (- u- dama ): ضُفدع

The short vowel – u – is just written as a loop above the consonant: (ــُــ)

The shape of the vowel – u – looks like this because it was originally written as a small version of the Arabic letter ( waw): و

The sukoon (ــْـــ)

is very different simply because it is the only one that is unvoiced.
It simply means there is no sound on that consonant. It has no phonic representation
Sukoon in Arabic is basically a small circle above the ِArabic letter

Let’s look at an example: سـبْـت – sabt
