Story of Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail:: Zamzam water in Quran

story of prophet ibrahim and ismail

Hajar was the second wife of Prophet Ibrahim (as). He and his first wife, Sarah, had been unable to have children for many years.
Sarah did not want Ibrahim (as) to grow old without children.

So, while they were living in Egypt, she suggested that Ibrahim (as) should marry her servant Hajar.

Thus, Ibrahim was finally gifted with his first-child: Prophet Ismail (as).

Allah tests the people whom He loves, and Ibrahim (as) was so beloved to Allah that he was nicknamed Khalil

or intimate friend. Allah had already sent him many tests: his father’s rejection of him, his people’s persecution of him, the test of being displaced, and the difficulty of not having children.

Now, Ibrahim (as) would be tested with his beloved and long-awaited child – and Hajar (as) would also experience this immense test.

Story of Hajra and Ismail in Islam

The story of how Ibrahim (as) left Hajar in the desert is well-known, but it is emotional every time we hear it! It is truly astonishing what both of them were willing to do for Allah’s sake.

According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Ibrahim (as) traveled to Makkah, which was the site of the Kaaba. But when Ibrahim (as) brought his wife and son there,
Makkah was an empty desert. No one had settled there, nor was there any water.
He (Ibrahim) made them sit over there (near the Kaaba) and placed near them a leather bag containing some dates,
and a small water-skin containing some water, and he set out homeward.
Ismail’s mother followed him

saying, “O Ibrahim! Where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person whose company we may enjoy, nor is there anything (to enjoy)?”
She repeated that to him many times, but he did not look back at her. Then she asked him, ”Has Allah ordered you to do?” He said, “Yes”.

She said, ”Then He will not neglect us“, and returned, while Ibrahim proceeded onwards

Without any doubt that He would take care of them, she turned and walked back to her spot next to the Ka’bah, to a pouch of dates and a few drinks of water,

and sat down beside her baby, completely certain that Allah would never abandon her.

The Safa And Marwa Story

So what happened after Ibrahim (as) left Hajar?

Ismail’s mother went on suckling Ismail and drinking from the water. When the water in the water-skin had all been used up, she became thirsty and her child also became thirsty.

she could not endure looking at him. and found that the mountain of As-Safa was the nearest mountain to her on that land.

She stood on it and started looking at the valley keenly so that she might see somebody, but she could not see anybody.
Then she descended from As-Safa and when she reached the valley, she tucked up her robe and ran in the valley like a person in distress and trouble,
until she crossed the valley and reached the Al-Marwa mountain, where she stood and started looking, expecting to see somebody, but she could not see anybody’.

Hajar ran between Safa and Marwa seven times, and each time she searched the desert, expecting to see somebody.
SubhanAllah, despite being in the midst of an unsettled and uncultivated desert, did not lose hope that Allah would send her help.

Hajar (as) could not even bear to look at Ismail (as) when he was thirsty, and we cannot imagine the pain she must have felt.

Equally, it is impossible to imagine holding onto hope in that situation, and firmly believing that Allah would not neglect them.

It was an act of trust so powerful that the Ummah of Muhammad (saw) commemorates it to this day, every year at Hajj.

The Story of Zamzam Water – The miracle of Zamzam

When Hajar (as) had run between the mountains seven times, she heard a voice as she was standing on Marwa.
Hajar (as) was amazed to see water flowing out of the earth! She raced down to the valley and started pushing the earth around the water to make a basin,

and then she filled up her water-skin with her hands. As she scooped up the water, it continued to flow,
so she said ‘Zome, zome’, which meant ‘Stop, stop’ – as she was worried the water would run out!
she could continue to have confidence that Allah would provide for her, just as He had sent her water when she had thought the ground was barren.

SubhanAllah, the Zamzam well continues to provide water to millions of pilgrims every year. And the best of creation (saw) himself prayed for Hajar

some people were passing through what is now Makkah when they saw a bird that had the habit of flying around water and not leaving it.
So they realized that there must be water nearby, even though they had never seen water during their previous journeys to this part of the desert.
They sent some scouts to search for it and when the scouts found the Zamzam well, they brought the rest of the group to it.

The Prophet (saw) said, ’Ismail’s mother was sitting near the water. They asked her, “Do you allow us to stay with you?”

She replied, “Yes, but you will have no right to possess the water”. They agreed to that.

Lessons from this Story
  • Allah tests those that he loves.
  • Even if you can’t find a solution, Allah will give you a way out.
  • Trust in Allah – but put in the effort yourself.

Story of Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail in Quran

story of prophet ibrahim and ismail

This is one of the most famous incidents that took place in the life of Ibrahim (AS). Almost ten years after he
left his wife Hajar and their beloved son Ismail in Makkah in Allah’s care, he finally reunited with them. Soon, however,
Allah would command him to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Through a dream, Allah commanded Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail (AS). It’s difficult to find a greater test of any father’s faith.
The decision to sacrifice his beloved son, who he had spent a decade away from and for whose birth he had spent years praying, cannot have been at all easy.
Nevertheless, Ibrahim’s (AS) unshakeable faith in Allah gave him the strength to submit to God’s Command.

The sacrifice was also a tremendous test of Ismail’s (AS) faith.  Yet, Ismail’s faith was unwavering, just like his noble father’s.

When Ibrahim (AS) mentioned the dream to his son and asked him what he thought, Ismail responded with complete submission to what Allah had ordered.
He told his father to obey Allah and assured him that he would remain patient.

Thus, Ibrahim (AS) proceeded with the sacrifice. When Ibrahim (AS) was on the verge of sacrificing his son, Allah stopped him and told him that he had fulfilled his duty,
which was a test for him. Allah replaced Ismail with a ram. The Lord rewarded Ibrahim (AS) for passing this immense test.
Allah appointed him a leader of all of humanity and blessed him with an offspring of prophets

story of prophet ibrahim and ismail

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) again came together after being apart for several years. At this point, the duo constructed the Kaaba on Allah’s command.
They made it a permanent sanctuary. The Kaaba is a place for the worship of Allah. It was in Makkah that Ibrahim (AS) left Hajar and Ismail (AS) in Allah’s care.
Ibrahim (AS) supplicated to Allah to make it a place for the establishment of prayer that would be safe from idolatry.

Many years later, Ibrahim (AS), along with his son Ismail (AS), was to build the House of Allah, the Kaaba.
It was to be the center of worship. People would collectively turn towards it when offering prayers.
Moreover, it would be the destination of millions of pilgrims who would travel to it to perform Hajj. The Kaaba is the first place of worship that is for all of mankind.

Ibrahim (AS) prayed for a prophet to emerge from the descendants of Ismail (AS).
Thousands of years later, Allah answered Ibrahim’s (AS) prayer and raised Muhammad (PBUH),
who was the final prophet, among the Arabs. While the Kaaba was the place of worship for all of humanity,

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the only prophet Allah sent to the whole of mankind.
