Salah for Kids: Printable Islamic Prayer Etiquette Flashcards

Prayer is the best of deeds and the most beloved to Allah. It is a safeguard from the Hellfire and a means to attain the Paradise of the righteous. In Islam, prayer holds a great status; it is the life of the heart, a shield against hypocrisy, an elevation in ranks, a remover of sins, and an expiation for faults and transgressions.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, performing Hajj to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.”

  • intention (Niyyah): It resides in the heart and refers to my conscious decision to perform the prayer as an act of worship for Allah.
I intend the Dhuhr prayer to be like Dhuhr and the Asr prayer to be like Asr.
  • Purification (Taharah): This is achieved through ablution (wudu) with pure water, full washing (ghusl), or dry purification (tayammum). It also includes cleansing oneself of impurities by removing them from clothing and the place of prayer.
  • Facing the Qibla: One must direct their prayer towards the Qibla, as a prayer performed in another direction is invalid.
  • Covering the Awrah: My clothing must properly cover the parts of the body that must be concealed, ensuring they are neither tight nor transparent. I wear the best and most dignified attire for prayer.

I face the Qibla and intend in my heart the prayer I wish to perform as an act of worship to Allah Almighty, without uttering it verbally. Then, I say the Takbirat al-Ihram (opening Takbir), raising my hands to the level of my shoulders or ears, with fingers extended and not spread apart.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“When you stand for prayer, perform ablution thoroughly, then face the Qibla and say Takbir.”
