Hajj Pilgrimage

The Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) is one of the five pillars of Islam, the obligations that all Muslims must uphold. Every adult Muslim (male or female) who has the physical and financial means is required to travel to Mecca to perform the Hajj once in his or her lifetime. In Mecca, Muslims from all over the world gather in a display of faith, unity, and solidarity by recreating the ritual that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed in his last pilgrimage.

Acts of Hajj Comprise Three Categories

1)   Pillars that one must perform so as not to invalidate his Hajj because they cannot be compensated.

2)   Obligatory acts that necessitate offering a sacrifice if they are not performed, without invalidating one’s Hajj.

3)   Voluntary and recommended acts of Sunnah that complete the pilgrim’s reward.

Pillars of Hajj:

According to the opinion of the majority of scholars, Hajj has four pillars, which are:

  1. Ihraam
  2.  Standing at ‘Arafah
  3. Tawaaf Al-Ifaadhah
  4. Sa‘y between the Safa and Marwah Mountains

Obligatory Acts of Hajj:

  1. Ihraam must start at the Sharee‘ah-approved Meeqaats, as the Prophet set the Meeqaats.
  2. Standing at ‘Arafah until sunset for those who stood during the day
as the Prophet  did so and said: “Learn your rituals from me.”
  3. Spending the night at Al-Muzdalifah on the night of An-Nahr (night of the tenth day of Thul-Hijjah)
is obligatory according to the opinion of the majority of scholars.
  4.  Spending the nights of the Days of Tashreeq at Mina as the Prophet did so.
  5.  Stoning the Jamraat:
Jamrat (stone of) Al-‘Aqabah must be stoned on the Day of ‘Eed and then stone the three Jamraat (stone pillars) during the Days of Tashreeq
    because the Prophet did so.
  6.  Cutting hair or shaving head.
  7.  Farewell Tawaaf:
The Prophet   said: “The last thing that one of you should do before leaving is to circumambulate Al-Bayt (the Ka‘bah).” [Muslim] Ibn ‘Abbaas   said: “The Prophet   commanded pilgrims that the last thing they should do in Makkah is to circumambulate Al-Bayt (the Ka‘bah), but he exempted menstruating women.”

Leaving any of these obligatory acts does not invalidate one’s Hajj, but one must offer a sacrifice (a sheep, one-seventh of a she-camel or a cow) to make up for it. This sacrifice must be slaughtered in Makkah and distributed among the poor people of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam. Ibn ‘Abbaas   said: “Whoever forgot any of the rituals (obligatory acts) or left it must offer a sacrifice.”
